_Sculpture + Sewing

August 28, 2010

Sculpture is very enjoyable and relaxing for me, because all inner angst is released through my hands as they work away on the clay. I love the process of refining basic shapes into detail figure, and the variety of mediums, from clay to wax to wood, all of which offer their own unique properties and look.

IMG_6034I taught myself how to sew because I am a die-hard Jim Henson fan and I have always wanted to make my own puppets. As I learned how to sew both by hand and with a machine, I discovered the joy of plushies, which are character designs come to life in a soft and cuddly form. Puppets are both an actor and a character design, so I love thinking of just what each puppet is all about, what’s their personality and background, then custom designing each one with shape, features and accessories. Latex puppets represent the combination of sculpting and casting, and allow me to bring my sculpts to life in a puppet form.

This is Leroy, a mitt style puppet made with latex face and hands. He is made from an original sculpt, which I made a plaster mold of and cast in latex. He is smaller in size, so he will be good for children to play with!
